Maroochydore Road Upgrade – Stage 2 (Bruce Hwy to Kunda Park)
Department of Transport and Main Roads
Project location:
Maroochydore, Queensland, Australia
Type of contract:
Design & Construct
Project value in AUD:
$80 Million
Start and completion date (of the commission):
2006 – 2009
Role:
Principal’s Representative (Contract Administration Services)
Project overview:
The project involved widening and duplication of a 5km section of Maroochydore Road between the Bruce Highway and the eastern end of Kunda Park to four lanes through both rural and urban environments at a cost of $80 million. The rural section of existing road was low-lying and flood prone and a number of significant bridges and multi-cell culverts were required across the Eudlo Creek floodplain.
The Department of Main Roads (TMR) decided the main part of the project would be delivered by a design and construct contract, which was the first TMR contract of its type for a number of years and required a major rewrite of both contract and technical documents. Because there was a large amount of up-front work, significant new contract document development and a compressed timeframe that TMR could not resource, TMR opted to combine the project management, planning, reference design, procurement and delivery into a comprehensive single engagement incorporating activities that are generally carried out ‘in-house’ or as a number of separate commissions.
Role on project:
The Driftwood Consulting team members were subcontracted to Connell Wagner who was appointed as the Principal’s Representative. The CA Team was responsible for the management of the project through the design and construction phases with a focus on quality, traffic, safety, environmental, and community management. The project was delivered to time and budget with a very satisfied client.
