The Tintenbar to Ewingsdale upgrade of the Pacific Highway is 17km of dual carriageway in Northern NSW, starting at the northern end of the Ballina bypass at Ross Lane and extending to the Ewingsdale interchange. The upgrade included the construction of the St Helena Tunnel, a 340m long twin-tube road tunnel under St Helena Hill located near Ewingsdale. The tunnel is being built to avoid the steep grades of St Helena Hill and associated heavy truck noise and pollution.
The project also included 18 bridges over creeks, existing roads, railway lines and over the new highway; over 3.5 million cubic metres of earthworks, soft soil foundations, concrete pavements and associated electrical infrastructure and road furniture. It was one of the largest projects to date on the Pacific Highway Upgrade.
