Project overview:
The Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project (SCAEP) was delivered by Sunshine Coast Council. As the region continues to grow, the airport is expanding to meet the needs of the community and support the region’s economic growth. It can be used by larger, more fuel-efficient planes that can fly longer distances from across Australia, such as the Airbus A330 and Boeing 787. The new runway allows direct flights to more destinations across Australia, Asia and the Western Pacific, enhancing national and global connections. It will also generate jobs and economic growth, boost tourism, help export businesses and secure air access to the Sunshine Coast for generations to come.
The airport expansion is the Sunshine Coast Council’s largest ever construction project. It includes the construction of a new 2,450m x 45m runway complete with a parallel taxiway (half length), changes to airspace and flight paths, an expansion of the apron at the existing terminal, upgraded aviation lighting, new access roads and utilities. Construction of associated infrastructure as part of SCAEP, including an upgraded taxiway system and apron expansion, was completed in December 2020.
Role on project:
The Driftwood Consulting team members were subcontracted to Aurecon who was appointed in two separate roles as the Independent Certifier (IC) and the Principal’s Representative (PR) for SCAEP. The IC Team certified the design and construction of the project works, including temporary work, and we oversaw the construction works and certified the Contractor’s compliance with the contract documents. The PR Team managed the Contract with John Holland on behalf of the Sunshine Coast Council. Both Teams were recognised by both the Client and the Contractor for working in a collaborative manner and being proactive in helping close out challenging design and construction issues.
